President to Visit Montco Friday

President Obama is scheduled to visit Hatfield manufacturer on Friday as part of his tour to raise awareness about the 'looming fiscal cliff.'

According to multiple news sources, President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Hatfield on Friday as part of a tour to make a public case for his administration's plan for addressing the impending "fiscal cliff."

So what is the fiscal cliff? It's the changes expected to go into effect when the 2011 Budget Control Act expires at the end of the year. Among the changes are:

  • The end of last year’s payroll tax cuts (which means a 2 percent tax increase for workers);
  • The end of the 2001-2003 tax cuts;
  • The beginning of heath care-related taxes set in motion by the president’s Affordable Care Act.

At the same time, spending cuts agreed on in last year's debt ceiling agreement will go into effect, meaning steep cuts to things like the defense budget and Medicare.

According to the Associated Press, both sides warn that going over the cliff could harm the fragile economic recovery, but the White House and congressional Republicans still differ on whether the answer is to raise taxes or close tax loopholes and deductions.

On Friday, the President will visit the Rodon Group, a Hatfield-based manufacturer that makes K'NEX, Tinkertoy and Angry Birds building sets, to highlight the company as an example of a business that thrives when middle-class consumers have more money in their pockets.

Pennsylvania GOP Spokesperson Valerie Caras issued an email statement suggesting that the president's time could be better spent working with Republicans in Washington.

"Considering the financial challenges our nation faces, we urge President Obama to get to work with Congressional Republicans to find a solution that prevents our economy from falling over the fiscal cliff." wrote Caras.

Read more about the president's visit here and check back with Patch on Friday for updates from the event.

So let's see, he helps create the fiscal cliff with his lack of leadership for the last 4 years (and who passed Obamacare?), now he goes around "raising awareness" about it? Let me guess - the "grand compromise" will be to set more deadlines 6 months or a year out, rather than to really address the problem.

The basic lack of political understanding here is scary. The "fiscal cliff" is a bipartisan agreement made in congress last summer as part of the debate on the rise of the national debt ceiling. Both parties chose this method of forced compromise at the end of the year to satisfy negotiations at the time that were stalled over how best to reduce government debt. The fiscal cliff is now doing exactly what it was designed to do- force compromise. You see both parties talking about concessions they would not normal discuss in order to avoid a "cliff" they both want to avoid.
Blaming Bush or Democrats shows an utter lack of intelligence on the most basic facts. The debt ceiling has been increased wrecklessly for decades, with both the white house and congress under stewardship of either party. Why would you be drawn to a political conversation when you obviously don't understand any of it? Sports link is at the top of the page.....

Random Vaginal Checks-Time to Evaluate the Far Right

It is time, postelection, to evaluate the far right, you know, those folks who try to dominate these pages by insulting and intimidating posters. The FoxNews crowd.

It is time to assess the drumbeat of the FoxNewsers, the Rush Limbaugh bunch, the teabaggers with their "lamestream media" rant. They proved their point. When you talk bullsh** and only listen to yourself, you come up with conclusions like the sophisticated Karl Rove who bilked $6 billion plus from donors who believed the delusional rant.

You lost.

You lost because there was never a time when you mattered or had anything to say. You are the epitome of ignorance and that is why you lost.

Here is my plea. Keep up with the Random Vaginal Inspections, the dog whistle race baiting, and the Stockholm Syndrome pandering to the wealthy. Don't change your stripes. Because while you're ranting we're going to pull your pants down to (1) pick your pockets and (2) show everyone how little your weenie is.

People really need to concerned if the tax cuts aren't extended. Adding back 2% payroll tax means less money in your paycheck. The people who will feel the end of the tax cuts are the Middle Class; many of whom are living pay check to pay check with little or nothing to spare.

And of course the health care taxes for Obama Care that his own elected officials didn't want. Think about it America. If Obama care was so good, elected officials would want it. Instead, they passed it; provided they didn't have to use it. The next time you go to your doctor ask them what they think of Obama care.

I was always told be careful what you wish for. Well Frieri, you got it and now you will have to live with the consequences of that the next 4 years. If you are employed don't cry when you have less money in your pay check due to Obama not extending the payroll tax cuts.

I think the country made a mistake in reelecting Obama but I am willing to put differences aside and hope fellow Republicans in DC try to work with him to do what is best for the country. BUT there is no way he can allow the tax cuts to expire without impacting a lot of Americans.

VJ
People who are middle class and live pay check to pay check need to take a serious look at how they spend their money.
The Affordable Care Act will make health care less expensive overall because everyone will be able to access preventive care. Currently, many who have no health insurance don't receive preventive care and end up in the ER because controllable conditions are out of control. And yes, I asked my doctor what she thinks of the ACA and she is all for it. In the US we spend far more per capita on health care than any other developed country and yet our outcomes are way down the list. Yes some people get excellent care, but most don't. And the elected officials who don't want to use this care - they already have a single payer, government healthcare system so they don't need to wade through the mess that the rest of us do. They just don't want the masses to have what they already have for life.

So I take it the fact that an overwhelming amount of congress voted in favor of the Iraq war means it was brilliant policy? After all, politicians from both parties wouldn't have endorsed said war if it wasn't in our best interests.

If you're concerned with the deficit, you want the tax cuts to expire. Government has two sources, deficit spending, and taxation. You don't get one without the other.

My beef is not with the President but with all these social welfare programs that allow people to get paid by the government for sitting around. We need HUD to clean up their section 8 program. Why doesn't Joel Johnston and his inspectors take away the housing vouchers of every section 8 person that has an xbox, wii, 52 inch flat screen tv, stereo system, laptop, expensive clothes, etc. It is obvious these people are living free and using all the 'money' they make to live well above the poverty standard that they claim to be. I'm sick of working two jobs to scrape by and watching my section 8 neighbor party all night, sleep all day and have plenty of money for going to six flags every weekend with her 'babies'. Not to mention the drug dealing boyfriend that lives with them who threatened me with a gun two weeks ago. Get rid of these low lifes that live off the government system. I hope the Montco Commissioners cut all social services so that these organizations will go back to Philly County and take the leeches with them. No more section 8!

Section 8 isn't to the benefit of those who are poor. It's a benefit to landlords, who get money from the government just for having tenants who qualify.

Beyond that, entitlement programs make up a very, very small amount of our spending. What are your feelings on the military, which makes up at least a quarter of our spending?

Anywho, you come across as a bitter piece of white trash who would rather whine about minorities then look in the mirror and realized you failed. It's not black folks fault you're barely scraping by with just two jobs; it's your fault for being an abject failure.

Tim, thanks for defending me to Sergei. Not once did I mention my race nor anyone else's in my post, yet Sergei made a vast over generalization. That says something more about Sergei actually being a racist. Oh, by the way, my section 8 neighbor is white from two white parents (I know them), her babies are from different fathers, so I could not tell you what their ethnic background and big shock- I am African American. And yes, there are African Americans in Norristown who do not support entitlement programs when they clearly are full of fraud; like Section 8 is. As for where I live let's just say it is in Norristown district 3 where there has been a long history of crime. I won't say anymore because I don't want some crack pot tracking me down or worse my neighbor's boyfriend reading patch and deciding that gun of his needs the bullets emptied. Norristown is dangerous, some neighborhoods more dangerous than others...

Tim, if you don't recognize how section 8 is a great benefit and easy money for landlords, perhaps you may want to look into going back to school. If you'd like to contest any of the other claims I've made in this discussion, I'd be more than willing to put you out to pasture. Your responses demonstrate a clear lack of nuance in...everything, really.
What's racist about the phrase "white trash"? Are you so whiny and sensitive that you interpret such a phrase as racist? If you can't see the obvious dog whistles sounded by Michael, again, your own ignorance is to blame. Did you even make it to high school?
Entitlements make up the largest portion of the federal budget? Well, again, perhaps this is your own lack of education speaking, but military spending makes up over half of the discretionary spending budget, and increased about 9% over the past decade. By comparison,s social security and medicare aren't even on the discretionary spending agend, because unlike the military, they are self funded. That's more than other government programs, and that's not even taking into consideration how much we spend in contrast to other states.
If you'd bother to read something a little more enlightening than the Daily News you'd be aware of these uncontroversial facts. I recommend the London Financial Times for starting off.

Hey Sergei, do you even live in Norristown? If you don't then shut up about section 8 because you are not suffering from the longstanding policy of Montgomery County dumping the vast majority of social services in Norristown. That also includes HUD refusing to look at another system for redistributing the housing vouchers more evenly through Montgomery County. Even Mr. Millner is pushing for HUD to take a look at that issue, a major part of his First Suburbs Project. In fact, if you do live in Norristown I suggest you ask every single council member (White and Black) how they feel about the concentration of section 8 in Norristown. And don't tell me that only landlords benefit. The housing voucher holder does as well. And I don't care how little HUD dollars are in the over all budget, it is clearly one of many programs that have a lot of abuses and needs to be cleaned up. I have to pay taxes anyway, why can't I fight for changing something that effects me everyday when I walk out my door. As for I'm not African American... I guess you just can't believe that there are African Americans out there that are articulate and have concerns with some of the Federal Social Service programs. I will not be responding again to any of your race bating rants.

Yes, Michael, I'm a resident of Norristown, and live not too far from where my ancestors first immigrated to Norristown almost 100 years ago. I can guarantee my family has been here longer than yours.
I'm well aware of how lower income issues, such as section 8, get dumped on Norristown by the rest of the county. Heck, I'm well aware of how townships like Whitpain and Plymouth drop their homeless citizens off in our neighborhood. What I'm not following is how this demonstrates an issue with section 8 program, or its recepients; seems to me like this demonstrates an issue with where section 8 being dumped on the poorest town in the county, and also an issue with the county leadership and their priorities for Norristown. If you want to get angry at someone for the volume of section 8 in Norristown, when compared to other townships, it seems like the county leadership would be the proper folk to get ticked off at.
I didn't say that only landlords benefit. I said that landlords benefit far more than the recipients do, because they get automatic money from the government. Even a landlord from an upscale apartment complex in King Of Prussia can't get that kind of guarantee from their wealthy residents, as landlords for section 8 housing get from the government.

Your political views have no bearing on why I think you're an angry old white man pretending to be black. I'm well aware of plenty of black conservatives. The reason I highly suspect that you are a white man pretending to be black is the fact that you felt the need to point this out the second you got called out for sounding racist dog whistles. Usually someone insisting they are black over the internet is an indication that they're a lying white man. Your politics have nothing to do with it.

Just about every member of Obama's economic team graduated from the University of Chicago. The university of Chicago is the preeminent capitalist economic school in the modern era, and has been since the death of Keynesian economics in the 70's. Google Milton Friedman and ask yourself if that guy is a socialist. Then google Tim Geithner and Larry Sumners, and ask yourself if they are socialists. If no, then neither is Obama or his economic team, many of whom are graduates from the University Of Chicago.

Do you people forget that it was Clinton, a democrat, who successfully destroyed welfare better than any republican candidate, and almost privatized social security?
