More than 1300 Children, Volunteers and Guests Celebrated GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer Day at The Franklin Institute

PHILADELPHIA — On Saturday, August 10, more than 1300 elementary school students, volunteers and their families celebrated the second annual GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK’s) Science in the Summer Day at The Franklin Institute.  The event marked the culmination of the 2013 GSK’s Science in the Summer hands-on science education program and the second year of a highly successful collaboration between GSK and The Franklin Institute.  As a reward for completing the program, participating children and volunteers — along with their family members under age 18 — were invited to enjoy the museum free of charge all day. Participants and their families gathered for a group shot in Benjamin Franklin Memorial Hall at noon.

Held annually, GSK’s Science in the Summer program is administered by The Franklin Institute and offered for free to students at libraries in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. In early August, the program completed its 27th season in the Greater Philadelphia area, introducing approximately 4,980 local children in grades two through six to the joys of science at 117 participating libraries. Nearly 116,000 students from the Greater Philadelphia region have participated in GSK’s Science in the Summer since its inception.  GSK also offers the program to students in North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Pa, and Metropolitan Washington, DC.

Registration for the 2014 GSK’s Science in the Summer program will begin next Spring. For more information, visit www.scienceinthesummer.com.
