Lower Providence Library to Hold 'Books, Brews and Beats'

Going on its third year, the 'Books, Brews and Beats' is one of the more important annual fundraising events for the library.

The Lower Providence Community Library will hold its third annual “Books, Brews and Beats” event, Nov. 10, from 7 – 10 p.m.

The event, which will take place in the library itself, will feature four select beers, likely coming from local micro-breweries, and each reflecting the unique tastes of the fall season. A selection of wines and soft drinks will also be available.

According to Lynn Burkholder, executive director of the Lower Providence Community Library, the event was known by various derivatives of “Oktoberfest,” but explained that the event is more than just, “beer in the library.”

“It’s a nice, comfortable setting. Nice, ambient lighting, and [the sort of] atmosphere for a fun evening event,” Burkholder said. “By holding it in the library, people get a chance to see all the wonderful programs and resources available.”

She said it’s an interesting scene, as library patrons can intermingle and enjoy themselves after library hours with a backdrop of rows and rows of books.

In addition to the beverages, the Books, Brews and Beats will also feature catering, as donated by the following local restaurants:

Sound Advice, a local disc jockey, will also provide music.

“That’s where the ‘beats’ come in,” Burkholder said.

Supporting your Local Library

According to Burkholder, holding the Books, Brews and Beats event in the library was a natural step for library fundraisers, considering its annual Wine Tasting event, going into its 13th year in March, and attracts nearly 300 people.

Last year, Burkholder said, the Books, Brews and Beer fall fundraiser attracted approximately 125 people.

She said she is hoping that this year’s event attracts over 200.

“We depend on the fundraising events as important sources to keep the library and its programs going,” Burkholder said.

According to Burkholder, due to statewide funding cuts to libraries, the Lower Providence Community Library has lost at least $58,000 since 2008.

Along with ticket sales, Books, Brews and Beats guests can participate in the event’s silent auction.

Burkholder said that prizes have been donated by local businesses, and include tickets to an overnight stay at the Black-Tie tailgate event of the Philadelphia Auto Show, an overnight stay at the Valley Forge Casino, as well as other prizes.

She said that the library is also looking for businesses or individuals to donate more prizes for the silent auction.

In addition to the silent auction, Burkholder said that the library is also looking for sponsors.

As listed on the Lower Providence Library website, several community sponsors have donated to the event, including:
