Cops Thwart Man Carting Off Cart

Elderly man takes shopping cart on a joyride down Ridge, Trooper roads.

[update - 1-15-13]

Lower Providence Police provided further details in the incident, repoting that the person involved with the removal of the shopping cart off the Acme property had the intention of returning the cart after he had used it to transport his groceries home. Upon learning the man's intentions, police say that the Acme manager decided not to pursue theft or related charges in the cart removal.

[update 1-11-13]

Lower Providence Police reported on Lower Providence Patch Facebook that the shopping cart suspect was not arrested for the incident. The cart was also said to have been returned to Acme Markets.

Three Lower Providence police patrol cars converged on the unit block of Trooper Road late Wednesday afternoon in response to a "theft in progress" call from the Acme Markets, located at 2775 W. Ridge Pike, in the township.

The haul? A shopping cart.

The suspect, an elderly-looking man, was stopped on foot in the driveway of a home at 24 N. Trooper Road.

Cops were interviewing neighbors and witnesses at the scene. Traffic was directed around the police vehicles but was not fully stopped along Trooper Road.

A full report will be available shortly, and Patch will update this story as more informaiton becomes available. The man is in custody and no further diversion of traffic is expected.

This happened down the street from where I live......
First of all the man was never taken into custody which was quite apparent when he walked into his house after the cops left. Secondly traffic was never diverted it was fine Thirdly this story was posted at 4:35 which was pretty much about the time the cops left. Mr dungan do you have a scanner and chase the police?

Seriously? A cart? Maybe this senior citizen couldn't carry his groceries home by himself and needed a cart. Maybe he was planning on taking it back after he unloaded his stuff. Really? Acme, you should be ashamed!

In response to the update on 1/15:
Gee, what a humanitarian that manager is? Why would he call the police in the first place? Did he not see that the man was older and that he had groceries in the cart? I could see if he was clearly running away with it screaming, 'YAY! I got a cart!' but anyone would see that he was only taking the stuff that he bought home! If I were this man, I wouldn't shop at Acme again! I hope he has someone that is able to drive him to a store in the future! I am glad that he didn't have a heart attack when all those police cars surrounded him! Have more compassion Acme!

I know that elderly man although he is a bit quirk he has never stolen anything in his 97 years of life. He doesn't drive but enjoys a short walk to the grocery store to give him a sense of independence in which he uses there carts to help with his traveling and transporting of Acme goods. He has been doing this for years and there has never been a problem up until this point. Really Acme I am very disappointed and will nerve shop there again.

well actually Dave , there are 2 homes that are literrally in the direct path of the center line ofRead More the sewer- I'm afraid if the sewer is permitted to go thru they would have to condemn them - the blasting would be so close- I don't think the houses could sustain it- they are built on pillars because their so close to the water- they are beautiful waterfront homes! full of children who go swimming and just love their homes and the creek.. the sewer would go right thru their well water lines and septic systems.. when there is another alternative right across the creek!

they don't care about us or their civic duty- I'm sorry but they made themselves very clear tonightRead More when after 3 yrs of pleading with them and even after DEP caught them in their deceptions with the 537 plan- they still chose to condemn us-- if they could just see the real people whose lives they are ruining forever but i forgot they don't care... well thank you Lower Providence for standing by us and thank you Trappe for standing with us.. Trappe was the only other township who cared!
