Lower Providence Fire Marshal, Department Provides Residents with Fire Safety Tips

In 2012, the Lower Providence Fire Department responded to 15 calls of fires in the township. According to the department's website, six of those calls occured during the winter months.

To help combat those fires, Ronald Kenwood, deputy fire marshal for Lower Providence Township, recently spoke with a Journal Register writer to discuss safety tips for the winter season.

He said the kitchen is often to blame for fires.

“Culinary mishaps account for the largest share of our fire emergency calls,” he said in the article on Montgomery News's website.

The deputy fire marshal also noted many of the issues he discussed in a November coffee talk with Lower Providence Supervisors. Patch covered that event here.

Tips offered at both the coffee talk and in the JRC article included:

• Keep ovens clean
• Keep glassware off of stovetops
• Stay attentive while cooking
• Do not leave space heaters on continually 
• Clean chimneys once a year
• Check smoke detectors' batteries twice a year
• Place smoking butts in proper disposal containers
• Keep generators 25-feet or more away from your home
• Install, check your carbon monoxide detectors twice a year
