Fire Shuts Down Skippack Pike During Rush Hour

Worcester and Skippack fire companies responded to a kitchen fire that caused damage throughout a two-apartment dwelling.

A kitchen fire snarled traffic on Skippack Pike at Valley Forge Road on Wednesday evening, closing off traffic in both directions for over an hour.

Worcester Volunteer Fire Dept. and Skippack Fire Co. responded just after 5 p.m. to a call at 3031 Skippack Pike, a two-apartment, three-story building, according to Worcester Fire Chief David Cornish.

Cornish said that a fire broke out in the kitchen of the upstairs apartment, and caused fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the top two floors of the dwelling. The first floor apartment suffered only water damage.

Firefighters were on the scene until after 6 p.m., blocking traffic to access the fire hydrant on the opposite side of the road, Cornish said. Traffic was being diverted at Hollow Road.

No one was home in either apartments when the fire broke out; Cornish said that a passerby saw smoke coming out of a window and called the police.

Pets are not believed to have been in the building at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and has been handed over to the State Police Fire Marshal.

Update 7:15 p.m. Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire in the second floor of a unit in a multifamily building. Nobody was home at the time of the fire, which caused extensive damage to the kitchen where the fire started.

The fire was reportedly called in by a passing motorist.

We'll have additional details shortly.

Initial report below

Early reports from the Montgomery County Department of Safety computer-aided dispatch system show that rescue crews from Worcester Volunteer Fire Department are called to the scene.

The fire is near Worcester Elementary school, and parents are being permitted to pick up students from after-school activities. Many are accessing the school according to radio reports via the museum back entrance along Valley Forge Road.

Many of the area's roadways, including Route 73 (Skippack Pike) and Route 363 (Valley Forge Road) are experiencing delays.

A Patch reporter is en route to the scene. This story will be updated as more information is made available.
