Two Days, Two Students Dead in Vehicle Strikes

Both victims were struck after dark

A second Montgomery County student in two days has died after being struck by a vehicle after dark.

Upper Moreland Police said a 17-year-old student at Upper Moreland High School was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at Abington Hospital after being struck at about 5:35 p.m. in the painted median of Blair Mill Road at Moreland Avenue.

The driver of the striking vehicle, described as a sport utility vehicle, is a 39-year-old Bucks County woman who remained at the scene and is said to be cooperating with authorities. The student's name has not been released by authorities.

On Monday night, a 16-year-old Pottsgrove High School Student died after being struck by a vehicle on East High Street (Ridge Pike) in the Sanatoga section of Lower Pottsgrove. The incident took place shortly before 9 p.m. Monday.

The driver was identified by authorities as a 43-year-old Collegeville woman. She was also said to be cooperating with authorities. The student's name was not released by police, but the Pottstown Mercury identified him as Tim Paciello, a junior.

Both incidents remain under police investigation. The Montgomery County District Attorney's office said Tuesday that county detectives are assisting Lower Pottsgrove Police in the investigation of the Monday incident.

About 4,000 pedestrians die in traffic incidents in the United States each year, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center at the University of North Carolina advises pedestrians walking at night to:

  • Wear bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials.
  • Carry a flashlight when walking at night.
  • Cross in a well-lit area at night.
  • Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars or other obstacles before crossing so drivers can see you.

I have come across teenagers several times at night walking on 29 north between Bridge St and Maple Ave wearing black. I don't see them until I see their face. I wish they would wear something, anything so I can see them. I couldn't live with myself if I hit a kid and killed them

I wish people were more aware there are others around and you might not be seen if wearing dark clothing at night. The roads are narrow in this area and I agree it would be difficult to live with myself if I hit and killed someone. We all need to practice commonsense.

I work in Horsham and know that intersection well. It's quite dangerous for pedestrians. Sympthathy out to the family. Terrible tragedy. They should put a crossing guard there during school hours. Now they probably will.

My deepest sympathy for this family! I think people need to focus on the facts. Which are there are none at this time. No parent wants to read or hear, "how if their child had only done this or that then they would still be alive". This accident is under investigation. Nobody knows the details. I pray it was an accident and the driver was not distracted. Society tends to assume that it would be the victim that was distracted. Please try and hold those assumptions because you never know you may regret what you write. There is a time and a place to discuss road safety. Let the parents grieve.

The time change does not help as well.

well actually Dave , there are 2 homes that are literrally in the direct path of the center line ofRead More the sewer- I'm afraid if the sewer is permitted to go thru they would have to condemn them - the blasting would be so close- I don't think the houses could sustain it- they are built on pillars because their so close to the water- they are beautiful waterfront homes! full of children who go swimming and just love their homes and the creek.. the sewer would go right thru their well water lines and septic systems.. when there is another alternative right across the creek!

they don't care about us or their civic duty- I'm sorry but they made themselves very clear tonightRead More when after 3 yrs of pleading with them and even after DEP caught them in their deceptions with the 537 plan- they still chose to condemn us-- if they could just see the real people whose lives they are ruining forever but i forgot they don't care... well thank you Lower Providence for standing by us and thank you Trappe for standing with us.. Trappe was the only other township who cared!
