PennDOT to Begin Construction on Route 422

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin preliminary construction on a $16.8 million project to improve the U.S Route 422 and the Trooper Road Interchange in October.

Two additional ramps will be built at the interchange—allowing driver to access 422 westbound from Trooper Road and vice versa in the eastbound lane— and infrastructure enhancements will be made as part of the U.S. 422 Schuylkill River Crossing Complex designed to improve travel along the corridor.  Construction on the interchange is expected to finish in fall 2015.

The off-ramp to be built from eastbound Route 422 to 363 and the on-ramp to be built to westbound Route 422 will “allow drivers to make moves in all directions when traveling between the state highways, and relieve congestion,” according to 422improvements.com.

U.S. 422 Eastbound

Build new U.S. 422 eastbound off-ramp to Route 363 (Trooper Road);

Realign the existing on-ramp to U.S. 422 east from Route 363 (Trooper Road);

Build a retaining wall and sound wall alongside the new eastbound U.S. 422 off-ramp;

Realign the intersection where the new eastbound U.S. 422 off-ramp will connect with Route 363 (Trooper Road); and

Install a new traffic signal where the new eastbound U.S. 422 off-ramp will connect with Route 363 (Trooper Road).

US 422 Westbound

Build a new on-ramp from Route 363 (Trooper Road) to U.S. 422 west; and

Build a new retaining wall along the new on-ramp.

Route 363 (Trooper Road) and Audubon Road Improvements

Widen Route 363 (Trooper Road) through the Audubon Road intersection;

Widen Audubon Road to include additional turn and merge lanes from Route 363 (Trooper Road);

Install crosswalks and handicap access ramps; and

Build a sidewalk along Route 363 (Trooper Road).

Reconfigure intersection to accommodate new U.S. 422 west on-ramp;

Rehabilitate Route 363 (Trooper Road) bridge deck; and

Install new traffic signal.
