Romney 'Victims' Video Shot at 76ers Co-Owner Marc Leder's Home

Leder hosted $50,000-per-person fundraiser during which Romney called 47 percent of voters 'victims.'

Gov. Mitt Romney said in a video recently released by liberal magazine Mother Jones that 47 percent of American voters consider themselves "victims."

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," said Romney in the video. "All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what… These are people who pay no income tax.”

These comments were made at the home of 76ers co-owner Marc Leder. Leder hosted a $50,000-per-person fundraiser at his Boca Raton, Fla., home on May 17, according to a report on Philly.com.

Leder, who became a co-owner on Oct. 17, 2011, owns the team with co-managing owner David Blitzer, CEO Adam Aron, Martin Geller, David Heller, Travis Hennings, James Lassiter, Jason Levien, Michael Rubin, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Leder owns a financial buyout firm called Sun Capital Partners, says an article in The Daily Pennsylvanian. He is a Wharton graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1983, according to the article.

President Barack Obama's campaign offices have called the video "shocking" in a statement released to the press. Romney's campaign has confirmed the video is genuine.

“It’s not elegantly stated, let me put it that way,” Romney said at an impromptu press conference late last night. The press conference can be seen on 6ABC.com. “Of course individuals are going to take responsibility for their life, and my campaign is about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again.”

The news is that the tape was conveniently edited. Yet another false narrative from the left wing media. Glad you all wasted your time on a story that was spoon fed to you. Idiots! Republicans we need to stop wasting our time with the libs! Independents are smart and thoughtful people. I believe they are seeing the evidence of what a total failure Obama is. Go talk to your community. Obama is the president of the ignorant or unaffected (people like JZ and David Letterman).
Morgan King September 20, 2012 at 06:33 PM
In 50 years, the American people will look back shocked at how desperate and hateful the last years of far-right social conservatives in politics were - how hypocritical their religious leaders, how intentionally misleading their news sources, how transparent their bigotry and fear, how they ignorantly they wrapped that hate in a shroud of patriotism. And nobody, anywhere, is going to look at the economic collapse of 2009 and view that as a failing of Obama's administration - they may question his policies on detainment and domestic surveillance and whathaveyou, but there isn't any reputable economist who didn't clearly see this coming back in the early 00s, and there isn't a chart out there that doesn't show the steep decline starting to hit well before Obama took office. Whatever strengths some conservative platforms might hold, as long as the Republican Party is shackled to the extremes of the Tea Party and Ayd Rand they are going to become increasingly marginalized as a legitimate political group.

Cindy... was that fox news as your source? hard to believe a women with any sense would be republican... Tape might be edited but the point was not taken out of context... he meant what he said. He admitted it.. Doesn't even try to deny it... He just doesn't realize the facts that most of those 47% are 1. Elderly (who normally vote GOP) and 2. Live in the South (who normally vote GOP). Completely bashed his own supporters... Oh yea over 6,000 millionaires didn't pay taxes either so they are included in the 47% as well.

A section of missing or unrecorded audio hardly changes the clear meaning of the audio we do have. Unless additional footage was all 'ha! just kidding, I meant the complete opposite of everything I just said' I can't really see how that's going to be relevant. Did he not arrange manufacturing deals using the labor of young women making pennies behind barbed wire? What he could possibly say that would change the meaning of "All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement." Here's the full transcript, clearly noting where the audio recording stops and resumes: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/09/full-transcript-mitt-romney-secret-video

Obama has now declared that the existing USA flag isn't good enough, now he is selling his own version: https://store.barackobama.com/obama-2012-store-collections/our-stripes-flag-print.html Turns out that this flag eerily resembles a photo from the murders in Benghazi: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/A3NLBLsCcAAcPOZ.jpg

Morgan if we keep following Obama in 50 years we may be a third world nation. Unions and tax and spend policies will destroy us. people will move their money out of the country companys will leave except for the ones we bail out, even some of those are expanding overseas now. if Obama wins who will he blame this time for the problems he inherits. 4 years ago he lied and said he could fix everything and now that he did not he blames everything and everyone except himself. Remember he said if he could'nt fix things he would be a one term president. Totally putting aside judging him as a good or bad president i just wish he would be a leader and a man and take some responsibility and say hey the buck stops hear. Last but not least, with Obama as commander and chief if the crap hits the fan in the middle east we may not have to worry about 50 years from now.
Cindy September 20, 2012 at 07:37 PM
You spend more time disecting a generalization than you do on the facts. Anybody with brains knows Romney wasn't talking about the old, military or hardworking Americans...get off your liberal talking points. Romney isn't the scary boogieman you try to make him out to be. Btw...all Repubs aren't heartless creatures who hate old people and the poor. How about this one...Americans were killed during another terrorist attack on 9 11. Where is the debate on that?

Richard H. - Allow me to add the following to your message -- a little off-topic -- to show that the GOP candidate actually IS one of the 47%, as well as in the top 1% of the 1%. Spin that, Mitt! http://www.thenation.com/blog/170000/isnt-mitt-romney-member-47-percent?rel=emailNation

Ron, the companies and their wealth have already gone overseas, and shit has been hitting the fan in the Middle East for a century at least. Obama has never - nor would any sane person - said he could 'fix everything.' You might hear: "I won't pretend the path I'm offering is quick or easy. I never have. You didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. You elected me to tell you the truth. And the truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over decades." as passing the buck, but that sounds like willingness to realistically confront our situation head-on to me. From where I'm sitting, he's been doing a pretty good job with mitigating a pretty bad situation. I'd rather give him another 4 years to work on it than let Romney take us back to the policies that got us in this position in the first place.
Morgan King September 20, 2012 at 08:18 PM
Wait, if he wasn't talking about them, how did he come up with 47%? Because once you take them out of the equation, it only leaves 7.9% http://cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/tanehisicoates/Breakdown3-06-17-11.gif
Morgan King September 20, 2012 at 08:20 PM
Yes, a politician using a US flag motif for merchandise is completely unheard of, and there's a secret conspiracy to use a random photo of blood smears as an icon to subvert the US. That makes total sense.
John September 20, 2012 at 08:58 PM
@EARNEST..."He is using a 2009 number that is now lower and has been falling as the economy has been improving, with more people working and earning a paycheck." ARE YOU KIDDING ME? 400,000 peopLE STOPPED looking for jobs, were NOT counted and the unemployment rate remains OVER 8%. ECONOMY HAS BEEN IMPROVING??? In THIS COUNTRY??? Do your math, if the number drops, yet the % stays the same....there are NOT more people earning a paycheck....UNLESS of course YOU count UNEMPLOYMENT CHECKS as PAYCHECKS! "UNDER CURRENT TAX POLICIES"....of course you know that that is about to CHANGE as well. I recommend you invest some time reading the ACA, and see where those numbers will be going....and I promise they wont be going down! And where do you find that 1/2 ROMNEY's 46.4%, or 23.2% of Americans pay no tax? You guys cant have it both ways....thought the 47% Romney was referring to WERE senior citizens....now youre claiming they are 50% of ROMNEY's 46.4%??? Finally "Rasmussen - 40% making less than $20,000 - Support Romney. - 50% making between $20 and $40,000 - Support Romney. Pew- similar results." IF this is the case, and 100% of the 46.4% support the Rich guy Romney, he would have @ 70% of the total electorate!!! So I have to guess that 100% dont support ROMNEY? Thank you, as I have been saying all along....where do you think Obama is getting his money, from lemonade stands?? no....its coming from billionaires and millionaires....JUST LIKE ROMNEY!!!
Ric September 20, 2012 at 09:14 PM
'"There Are A Whole Bunch Of Millionaires Who Aren't Paying Taxes At All Either" Obama to Romney.
John September 20, 2012 at 09:17 PM
@LIMEY, I actually dont know where to begin...... Let's start from the beginning. Unlike OBAMA's advertisements, HE didnt save my rear end....ACTUALLY I created my own wealth thru education and work ethic.....OBAMA wants to take my wealth and give it to rocket scientists, such as yourself. Second, HATRED for Black man??? THAT my friend makes YOU a racist as your ignorance is abundant. Third - Where did you attain your facts regarding small amount of people game the system. Take a look around, 50 MILLION on food stamps....I am not the one calling them GAMING the system, but thats a lotta people with their hand out. You are joining the senoirs who pay no federal taxes with 100 of the richest Americans in the country..... Rationalize my life by finding a scapegoat?? Why dont you take your scapegoat out to the pasture and tell him to stay out of my business....I DONT NEED HIS HELP! "OBAMA SAVED US ECONOMICALLY AND MILITARILY" My mouth is stuck open!!! Limeport....maybe your aluminum foil tv antenna was twisted last week.....4 Americans were murdered, the ENTIRE Muslim world is rioting AGAINST the US, 2 Marines are killed, $2oo Million in jet damages....$4/gallon of gas, unemployment >14% (when you count everyone)....what planet are you living on? OHHHHH thats it, you like quoting the all knowing BIDEN....that explains EVERYHING!!!!
Morgan King September 20, 2012 at 09:21 PM
John, that's not how percentages work at all. That's like 6th grade math. Since these figures don't include data on the 10% of the population that are retired and elderly, that leaves 36% of people not paying annual income tax, right? If, of that 36%, 40% of the under-20k people (which is 6.9% of the total) support Romney, that's 2.7% of people that don't pay out annual income taxes. If an additional 50% of people in the 20k-40k range (that's 28% of the 46%), the you've got an other 14% - so a total of 16.7% of the 36% that support Romney, or 46.4%. Probably more like 50% of the 46% once you throw in the elderly vote.
henry W. heuer September 20, 2012 at 09:43 PM
Cindy, Sorry, but that wasn’t a generalization. Mr. Romney pronounced a clear declaration of contempt for 47% of the country. If he said “I’m not going to focus on the 47% who don’t pay income taxes because tax cuts won’t resonate with them” and left it at that, that’s a clear political assessment. A foolish one as he has many supporters in the 47% but none the less a political assessment. But he didn’t. He quite clearly condemned nearly half the county as virtual free loaders. There is simply no getting around that. In doing so, he clearly defined Democrats worst fears about Mitt Romney as president. He has no idea what’s it’s like to struggle to make ends meet (buy the Jiff or the store brand? Ha!) He has no comprehension of the advantages he enjoyed and the massive leg up they allowed him. And as far as a debate on the recent attacks, what debate is that? If the implication is that Mr. Obama owns that, then so too the republicans own 9/11, a wasteful and unnecessary Iraq war((flush nearly a trillion dollars), the dragging out of the war in Afghanistan, and the crash of the economy putting as many people out of work as the last 4 recessions combined. Vote for a Republican after the mess they made of it the last time? Really? Seriously? You have to be joking.
John September 20, 2012 at 09:43 PM
@Louie....Do you really think there has ever been a candidate for President who stepped into the Oval Office and thought to themselves "I'm going to do every think I can to screw this country over?" YES....he has done that! His highest attorney is looking at doing time...he has not reached across the aisle ...EVER. He has NOT improved any relations with anyone, yet he has alienated us with Great Britain, Israel and most of Europe, not to mention China and Russia. He has millions protesting against us in the streets worldwide. Our economy is in the crapper and NOT getting better, our military is all over the world, and he intends on DECREASING its budget, gas is $4/gallon (Is he paying off HIS buddies in the oil industry, as GW was accused?), and he wants to spend and tax more......so, uh, yeah.....I would say more than 50% of Americans feel at this moment this country is in dire straits! Get back in that rowboat and start rowing my friend....to where I dont know, but I fear that the America we knew will not be the America in the future.
John September 20, 2012 at 09:51 PM
Agreed....address the more important issues. I sincerely hope that the debates ahead do so. I dont want to hear about dreams, and I dont want fingerpointing. I dont have to like my President, as I dont have to like my boss....but I do have to respect them on some level. I dont want to hear about statistics and percentages...I dont want excuses....I dont want to do the same thing re-wrapped......I want to hear SOLUTIONS that are well thought out, and will better this country...we shall see
John September 20, 2012 at 09:57 PM
LOL....c'mon people, for every article that supports Obama, there are articles that support Romney. For every article that blasts Obama, there are articles that blast Romney....point / counterpoint. READ THE ACA......ALL of it....invest your time to learn what is in Obamacare. Dont take CNN's word, Huffington Posts Cliffnotes, FOX news's take on it.....READ IT! Once you do, you will see what the LAW says! Then make an educated decision for yourself.

We've heard much about the 47% who don't pay income taxes. Here's some other stats: The median 4 person family in the USA paid 5.6% income tax on their $75,648 income, and had a 15% marginal tax rate on the next dollar. A 4 person family making half of the median paid -6.8% tax on their $37,824 income, which includes the fully refundable tax rebates like EITC and chilc tax credits. They didn't pat tax and their refunds were typically more than what was withheld from their paychecks. A four person family with double the median income typically paid 12.93% of that as income tax, and their marginal tax rate was 25%.
Morgan King September 21, 2012 at 12:16 AM
That's an easy way to dismiss actual reporting as a wash, though. It's pretty fallacious to say 'well, who can know, it's all partisan' just to ignore news that contradicts what you want to hear. We should all be reading and understanding the actual laws instead of only hearing the distilled version, I couldn't agree more.
