Timothy Trail to Get the Eagle Scout Treatment

Eagle Scout candidate and Methacton High School senior Jim Donnelly has dedicated his project toward improving the Eagleville Park trail.

Eagle Scout candidate Jim Donnelly presented his Eagle Scout project plans to the Sept. 11 Lower Providence Parks and Recreation board.

Donnelly, 17, is a Boy Scout with Troop 133, which meets in the Worcester Township Building. Donnelly is also a senior at Methacton High School.

For his Eagle Scout project, Donnelly proposed improvements to Eagleville Park’s Timothy Trail, located behind the park’s outdoor stage.

  • Repairs to a footbridge that spans a small creek
  • Repairs to a rope fence on the trail
  • Add a trail transition from the trail to the bridge
  • Cleaning graffiti on tees, using environmentally conscious methods.

According to Karl Lukens, Lower Providence Parks and Recreation director, the bridge is estimated to be at least 15 years old.

Donnelly said that the bridge repairs will include plank replacement, bolstering the structure and placing a handrail on it. The finished project will look similar in design to the bridge at Cranberry Park, which a fellow Eagle Scout built for his project.

The majority of the costs involved, Donnelly told the board, deal mostly with the lumber purchases. He said he is currently negotiating with Home Depot and Lowes on the best deal for the wood.

The materials for the project will be attained through fundraising efforts. Donnelly said that he would raise funds through Applebees’ “Dining to Donate” fundraising program.

Donnelly estimates that the project will cost approximately $400. He expects the project to be completed within three days, with at least eight scouts and four adults working each day.

“I chose this project because I actually walk on the Timothy Trail for recreation. It’s right next to a waterfall and it’s a nice spot,” Donnelly said. “I think if I do this project and I do it well, it will serve as a model for other projects to come.”

According to several members of the board, the Timothy Trail is a particularly pleasant hike, with spectacular natural appeal, including a clearing overlooking a waterfall.
