Methacton Students Receive $2,500 through the Marc J. Small Scholarship

The scholarships honor Lower Providence resident and U.S. Army Special Forces Medic Marc Small, who was killed in action, while serving his country.

The 2013 Marc J. Small Scholarship was awarded to two Methacton High School students at the school’s May 22 Awards Night.

The students, Elexa Sherman and Luke Herber, received the scholarship, which includes a $2,500 award to be used for their continued education. In addition, the students’ names will be displayed on a perpetual plaque at the school.

The scholarship is given in honor of Lower Providence resident and U.S. Special Forces Medic Marc J. Small, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Feb. 12, 2009.

According to a press release on the event, Marc’s sister Meghan and friend Matt presented the scholarship to the students, who were selected based on their applications, recommendations from their coaches and a personal references. The scholarship recognizes a student’s strength, bravery and character.

“These qualities were the foundations of Marc’s persona and part of the reason we honor him today,” states the release.

In addition to the scholarship, the Methacton United Soccer Club are sponsores of the Marc J. Small Memorial Soccer Tournament. According to the release, Marc played soccer throughout his youth for the club and Methacton High School.

The annual memorial tournament also focuses on the same traits that the scholarship awards, as strength, bravery and character were the traits that Marc valued most in his personality and life, according to the release.

The fifth-annual Marc J. Small Memorial Soccer tournament will take place June 8, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Methacton High School; and will feature a 3-vs.-3 tournament for ages 7 to adult.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit will fund the two annual Marc J. Small Scholarships.

As evidence of his intelligence, commitment, and courage, Marc rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, led his class in medical training and earned the elite “Green Beret”.  Marc became a medic to care for his Army team as well as some of the poorest, most oppressed people on earth.  Marc had only been in Afghanistan three weeks, but during that time he treated 40 patients a day, and built a relationship with the local people and children… While his loss is very difficult for everyone who knew him; they know his heroism and sacrifice, like so many others, was in defense of freedom and liberty.
