Volunteers needed for Hoy Park Tree Planting

The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy is looking for volunteers to help restore the park's stream habitat, Sept. 21 and 22.

The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy (PWC) will use the Southeastern Pennsylvania Resource Conservation and Development Council (SEPA RC&D) Conservation Planting Trailer to plant native trees and shrubs along the Perkiomen Creek Watershed in Hoy Park, according to separcd.org.

The PWC needs volunteers’ to help restore the watershed’s riparian corridor, which is the land adjacent to a stream, river or pond. According to the SEPA RC&D website, the riparian corridor can become impaired by nearby development, stormwater erosion and exotic invasive plants. The website further explains that volunteers’ assistance is needed to restore the stream riparian habitat by removing exotic invasive plants and replacing them with native trees and shrubs.

An opportunity for such service has been scheduled at for 10 a.m., Sept. 21 and 22.

The PWC will be planting a variety of native trees and shrubs that will help restore riparian habitat along the Perkiomen Creek, and suggests that volunteers should make sure their toes, arms and legs are covered with pants, closed-toe shoes and long-sleeve shirts. Volunteers with shovels are also asked to bring them to the event.

The organizers of the event will also teach about tree planting, stream restorations and healthy soils, plants and forests.
