In 2012, the Lower Providence Fire Department responded to 15 calls of fires in the township. According to the department's website, six of those calls occured during the winter months. To help combat those fires, Ronald Kenwood, deputy fire marshal for Lower Providence Township, recently spoke with a Journal Register writer to discuss safety tips for the winter season. He said the kitchen is often to blame for fires. “Culinary mishaps account for the largest share of our fire emergency calls,” he said in the article on Montgomery News's website. The deputy fire marshal also noted many of the issues he discussed in a November coffee talk with Lower Providence Supervisors. Patch covered that event here. Tips offered at both the coffee talk …

Visitors driving through the township on Saturday, Dec. 15, may have been puzzled by the constant sounds of fire-truck sirens. But, families in each of the neighborhoods of Lower Providence new exactly what the sound meant. As the sirens grew louder, township families, led by their excited children, burst out of their doors looking for the arrival of Santa Claus. Starting at around 9 a.m. and finishing up by dusk, the Lower Providence Fire Department (LPFD) escorted Santa Claus himself to greet the nearly 22,000 residents in all the neighborhoods of the 14-square mile township. “We used to chase Santa on our street,” Kyle Lochner, 15-year LPFD volunteer firefighter, said. Lochner, who has helped with the Santa Run each year of his LPFD …

The much-anticipated Lower Providence Santa Run will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15. According to Jackie Rittenhouse, president of the Lower Providence Fire Department, the Santa Run will begin during the early morning hours, and is expected to last until every neighborhood of the township gets a visit from Santa. “Santa and his firefighter friends try really hard to get to all 22,000 residents in the 14-square-mile area,” Rittenhouse said in an e-mail. She said that the Santa Run is often difficult to coordinate, as the township’s fire department is comprised of an all-volunteer membership, with each member having different schedules throughout the day. But, she said that the annual tradition is an important one in the township. “It’s a …

The suspect's vehicle was stopped in the parking lot of the Lower Providence Fire Department.
An outdoor bathroom stop in Eagleville on Thanksgiving night led to drug charges for a Spring Mount area man. Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, Lower Providence Police Corporal Michael Slattery was on foot outside the Lower Providence Fire Department on Ridge Pike when he noticed a Chevrolet Silverado truck in the building's parking lot, according to a criminal complaint filed by Slattery. According to Slattery, a man standing next to the truck was urinating in the parking lot. The man then entered the back seat of the truck, which, Slattery wrote, backed up and "accelerated at a high rate of speed, spinning the tires as it left the lot." As the truck waited to pull onto Ridge Pike, Slattery wrote, he approached the passenger side of …

Charles Miller Sr. and Christine Russell were sworn in as Lower Providence Township Fire Police Officers at the Oct. 18 board of supervisors meeting.
Two new Lower Providence Township fire police officers were sworn into their respective offices at the Oct. 18 Board of Supervisors meeting. Prior to being sworn in, Charles Miller Sr. and Christine Russell participated as observers during emergency calls. Rick Brown, board of supervisors chairman, administered the oath of office to Miller and Russell. According to Brown, just as the township’s fire department, fire police officers are also volunteers. Their duties call them out to scenes of emergency or accidents at all hours of the day or night in order to direct traffic and keep passersby safe. “We really need these folks, and we’re lucky to have volunteers,” Brown said.

Hundreds of residents came out to meet and greet their local first-responders at the Lower Providence Fire Department Open House, Oct. 12.
Families huddled close together, pressing against yellow-caution tape, as they eagerly strained to witness a vehicle-rescue in action. On the other side of the tape, several Lower Providence firefighters were gathered around a silver car that was flipped on its side. The vehicle’s windshield was smashed, its hood was crumpled, and the crunch of glass could be heard under the heavy boots of each firefighter’s step. Lower Providence fire fighter lieutenant, Wes Griffith, narrated the action for the gathered audience, explaining that if anyone were to be caught in this wreckage, they would certainly be trapped. He described how the firefighters worked quickly but methodically to stabilize the car and free any passengers inside by completely …
