Eagle Scout candidate Matt Pellegrino recently organized a troop of volunteers to right tombstones and to rebuild part of the crypt of the first American-born Lutheran pastor in nearby North Wales.
A weight has finally been lifted off the shoulders of Silas and Barbara Land. All it took was a literal troop of about 30 volunteer scouts, friends, family, business owners and community members, some elbow grease and the determined leadership of Eagle Scout candidate Matt Pelligrino. The tripod and block and tackle helped a bit too. "It allows one man to do the work of 10," said one volunteer. "We've done six or seven so far. Even some doubles." Perhaps more impressive is the refurbishment of part of the crypt of the first American-born pastor to enter the Lutheran ministry: Rev. Jacob Van Buskirk. The 16-year-old Pellegrino, a Methacton High School student and member of Troop 98 in Whitpain Township, was re-righting history in The Old …

Methacton alum Kyle Allebach has launched Methacton Politics, a blog chronicling the school district news that isn't making the local papers.
Many Lower Providence Patch readers may recognize Kyle Allebach's name from his blog posts here on Patch.footing in the blogosphere and has launched Methacton Politics, a blog focused on "the little things that happen in the Methacton School District that seem to never end up in The Times Herald or never talked about as local news." According to Allebach, he's been a regular at school board meetings for the last five years and he pledges that facts posted on his page will be public knowledge and publicly sourced. Allebach launched the blog last month and has already done a pretty good job of covering the latest in the Worcester lighting ordinance debacle, Methacton's plans for new planetarium equipment and a few of the items that were …

The veteran math teacher is also an all-star athlete and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at his alma matter, West Chester University, this Friday night.
Frank Petrone may be a brain at Arcola Intermediate School in Eagleville, but he's got a storied history as a jock. That history will be celebrated this Friday, April 19, when Petrone will be inducted into West Chester University's W. Glenn Killinger Football Hall of Fame. Petrone, a 7th-grade math teacher at Arcola, played defensive lineman at WCU in the late 1960s/early '70s and continued his gridiron career as an assistant coach at Bishop Kenrick and William Tennant high schools. Petrone and his wife Linda currently live in Cedars. He is the father of two children, Andria Petrone Bagley of Boston, Mass. and Phillip Petrone of Conshohocken. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place during the annual Killinger Foundation Banquet…

Through the Montco DA and Mission Kids, every county public elementary school received a copy of the Internet Safety book 'The Mouse Who Went Surfing Alone.'
The more than 100 public elementary schools throughout Montgomery County received copies of Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman's children's book "The Mouse Who Went Surfing Alone", as part of a collaborative Internet Safety awareness campaign with the Mission Kids Child Advocacy Center. “Methacton is grateful for the organization’s support – not only in providing outreach efforts such as this, but in partnering with the district in support of professional development aimed at helping our staff recognize and report child abuse,” a Methacton School District spokesperson said. Mission Kids, a national nonprofit child advocacy center, co-founded by Ferman, is dedicated to easing the criminal justice system for children who have …

Montco Mommy takes district to task over absentee policies.
This year, the flu really hit our family pretty hard. I hear it was one of the worst flu seasons ever. My son probably felt it worst of all. At age 7, there isn't much you can do for him, but monitor his fever and keep it down with acetaminophen and ibuprophen. Thankfully, he made it through OK. We took two different trips to the doctor, and all in all, he missed 10 days, or two weeks, of school. Thankfully it was right around the holidays, so I figured with Christmas break looming, he'd not miss much work. It only took he and me a few days to catch up his school work. I thought the flu season was conquered, and all was behind us. That is until I got the mail a few days ago. It seems that since my son has missed more than 10 days this …

Dr. Miller, who retired as superintendent for Methacton School District in 2007, will return while the board searches for a permanent replacement for Dr. Quinn, who stepped down last month.
According to a release issued by Methacton School District, the district's board of school directors appointed Dr. Jeffrey A. Miller as acting superintendent of schools in a special meeting Tuesday night, April 9. The board will presumably appoint an interim superintendent to replace Dr. Timothy Quinn, who stepped down from the position in March.
Methacton School District's board of directors will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, April 9, to "take action on a personnel issue and any other business brought before the Board of School Directors," according to the district's website. At the meeting, the board will presumably appoint an interim superintendent while they mount a search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Timothy Quinn, who stepped down at the end of March. Quinn was at the center of a scandal in recent months for an alleged relationship he was having with Dr. Diane Barrie, the district’s director of curriculum. Barrie is also resigning her position effective June 13. The board has also rescheduled its planned May meetings. The meetings wil now take place Tuesday, May …

As a graduate I can't say I agree with the college readiness. Yeah, they shove into our face how "vital" college is but don't a) prepare for reality outside of college or b) help explore alternatives to universities for those who can't afford it or don't learn well in a classroom environment. They think everyone around there comes from money just because some do, and that everyone learns the same…   more ›
