Rummage Sale, Blood Drive and More at Lower Providence Presbyterian This Saturday

Saturday is a big day for the Lower Providence church.

Three is indeed the magic number. Just ask the folks at Lower Providence Presbyterian Church. The church is hosting not one, not two, but three big events this Saturday at its grounds at 3050 West Ridge Pike in Eagleville. Up first is the church's big rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is still taking donations of household items, toys, games, and other items (no clothes pleas) and everything will be up for sale on Saturday. All proceeds go to fund the church's youth programs. Want to take a break from rummaging? Pop over to the Red Cross Blood Drive happening from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and make a donation that could save lives. Appointments are preferred. Call Pat O'Reilly at 610-454-1018 for more information or to make an …

Skyview Upper Elementary Students Spread the Holiday Cheer and Charity

Skyview held its second annual Community Service Day presenting five local charities with donations.

Dec. 21 was a special day for students at Skyview Upper Elementary, as they celebrated the school’s second-annual Community Service Day. “It’s structured to give back, and to learn something about the charities,” Melissa Gorla, Skyview Upper Elementary School principal, said. According to Gorla, teams of Skyview students choose local charities to support by collecting items they needed. In return, the charities stop by the school on Community Service Day, not only to receive the items, but also to share a little bit about what they do in a fun-filled and casual setting. This year, the students supported the following charities: According to fifth grade teacher Nan Davis, there are over 800 students at Skyview. She said each student has …

Red Cross Delivers Mobile Home Fire Safety Literature

For the second year, the Westmont volunteer team of the Southeastern Pennsylvania American Red Cross visited local mobile park homes to ensure fire safety.

On the early morning of Dec. 15, white plastic bags with little red crosses could be seen fluttering on the mailbox posts throughout the Valley Forge Crossing mobile park community. Each bag contained emergency preparedness and fire safety literature specific to manufactured homes, and were distributed by volunteer members of the Westmont Team of the South Eastern Pennsylvania (SEPA) Red Cross. “There’s a lot of wonderful people that volunteer with the Red Cross,” Ed Kershner, a volunteer lead responder with the Westmont team, said. Kershner started volunteering with the Red Cross since 2005, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As an Audubon resident, Kershner has since joined one of the many individual volunteer Disaster Action Teams (…

Thunderstorm Safety Tips

Don't wait for thunder to bring in outdoor items

In the wake of the severe thunderstorm watch issued Wednesday by the National Weather Service, the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania offered some sound advice on its Twitter feed. Some of it you've been hearing since you were in elementary school: for example, if you are stuck outside, avoid high ground, water, tall trees, and metal objects. Other tips, however, might not occur to everyone. "Bring items in from outside NOW that could blow away during a storm," the agency said. Waiting until you see the sky darken and hear thunder rumbling can place you at risk for being struck by lightning. The agency also asked people to evacuate mobile homes that can blow over in high winds and to stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after …
