Public Seeks Balance with Worcester ‘Lighting Ordinance’

Over 100 people attended the first public hearing of Worcester Township’s proposed ordinance that would allow field lighting at Methacton High School.

The Worcester Township Board of Supervisors held a public hearing over the township’s proposed “Lighting Ordinance,” at the Jan. 16 business meeting. The ordinance, which the supervisors voted to publically advertise at its Dec. 19, 2012 business meeting, proposes to allow field lights for nighttime use of two of Methacton High School’s athletic fields. Just as the Dec. 19 meeting was well attended, the Jan. 16 public hearing left standing room only. Many of those in attendance, who advocate for the lights installation, represented various organized bodies of the Methacton School District community, including school board members and members of sports organizations from both Lower Providence and Worcester townships. “As you can see, it’s …

The Worcester Township Board of Supervisors voted to approve the advertisement of an ordinance that would allow Field Lights at the high school.

The Worcester Township Board of Supervisors had a full agenda at the Dec. 19 regular meeting. However, with approximately 20 or more members of the Methacton School Community, including representatives of the school board, Methacton High School and school sports organizations, in attendance at the meeting, one particular agenda item was moved to the top of the list. The item was a vote to approve the advertisement to adopt a proposed township ordinance, known as the “Lighting Ordinance,” [see .pdf gallery] which would enable the construction of stadium lights at the Methacton High School athletic field. At the meeting, the board unanimously voted to approve the advertisement, setting in motion the process of approving construction for the …

Methacton School Community encouraged to attend the Dec. 19 Worcester Township Supervisors meeting.

Members of the Methacton School Board are urging the school community to show their support of installing Methacton High School athletic field lights. During the Dec. 4 Methacton School Board regular meeting, board member Jim Phillips said that the Worcester Township Board of Supervisors is expected to place a vote concerning the installation of field lights on their Dec. 19 meeting agenda. “I would appreciate it if people were to show their support for Methacton and make themselves available for that night,” Phillips said. The lights installation would enable night use of the athletic field. According to a 1998 Philly.com article, the lights have been a point of contention since the early 1980s. The article reports that the Worcester …

Not sure if I can attend the meeting, but would like to suggest to the board of supervisors that the lights can come with hours of operation. I know of a lighted turf field in another jurisdiction that has controls on the lights so that Sun-Thurs the lights go off at 8:45 (events are scheduled to end at 8:30 so that there is time to walk to cars) and on Fri and Sat the lights must go off at 10:15…   more ›

10-18 LP Patch gets an A for quality reporting! I'm really unsure that turf is safer than grass for players and nearby wells. Turf is such a big investment and departure from academics that multiple districts must consider jointly operated fields in ideal locations. That would lead to keeping the Methacton field safer for students and local residents while helping athletics.   more ›
